CBT is based on the cognitive model: the way that individuals perceive a situation is more closely connected to their reaction than the situation itself. One important part of CBT is helping clients change their unhelpful thinking and behavior that lead to enduring improvement in their mood and functioning. CBT uses a variety of cognitive and behavioral techniques, but it isn’t defined by its use of these strategies.

It could be a sport or a hobby, peak performance at work, a special occasion or spending time with a special person. Whatever the activity, there are particular qualities: being really present and alive to your experience. Being deeply absorbed in this and only this – nothing else bothers you. There’s a deep sense of satisfaction.
Motivational interviewing is a directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. It is most centrally defined not by technique but by its spirit as a facilitative style for interpersonal relationship.
